Copenhagen, Denmark

Hey all -
Our internet time here is limited so I just wanted to let you all know that we got to Copenhagen safely and we'll talk to you all when we get to Berlin tomorrow. Happy New Year from all of us, and we'll see you all soon!

So after a night of no sleep, alex and I woke Pat and Brady up at 5:30 to catch our 6:21 train to Copenhagen.  The train we took was much nicer than the last one, and was a high-speed train which made the ride much smoother.  Alex and I slept most of the way, but woke up in time to see us cross the Oresund Bridge, a nearly 7-mile long combination bridge and tunnel, the largest in all of Europe.  We arrived in Copenhagen at 11:20, 15 minutes ahead of schedule.  We bought our tickets for when we were leaving for Berlin, and headed off to our Hostel.  We stayed at the Absalon Annex, the most expensive and worst hostel of the trip, but because it was New Year's Eve, there was little we could do.

We dropped our bags off and began walking through the city.  We passed by Tivoli Gardens
and city hall, both of which were beautiful.  From there we walked down the Stroget, which is a long road lined with shops.  At the end of the Stroget we came across the Round Tower, which was Tycho Brahe's observatory when he first observed the stars and planets.  After admiring the views of the city, we walked back down the Stroget and noticed that many shops were closing early because it was New Year's Eve.  We decided that we were too poor to pay the cover at a bar for the night (all around $50), so we bought some beer and went back to the room for a bit.

At around 9:45 we decided to go out and enjoy New Year's Eve.  The only word to describe the nigh is "mayhem".  People were setting off fireworks and mortars everywhere we turned.  One lade dropped one right in front of us forcing us to run away, while another accidentally dropped a roman candle, hitting a biker.  The closer it got to midnight the
crazier the fireworks got.  We stood in awe of what we were seeing in the middle of the city in front of town hall (check out the video below).  At around 12:30 we began making our way back to the hostel to sleep to the sound of a war-zone.  This was definitely a new years we will never forget.

Stockholm, Sweden

Hey all! We're here in Stockholm safely. I'd like to stay and tell you about everything but we're on our way out to go get some reindeer for dinner (not kidding) and then go to the Nordic Ice Bar for a drink...yeah...made entirely of Ice...in the Ice Hotel....also made entirely of ice...ok I have to go, this is too exciting...I'll update tomorrow or in copenhagen...Happy New Year if I don't get to you guys before then!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So we began the day by waking up in Norway at 6:15 am, a time entirely too early for our liking.  We walked down to the train station and took the 7:35 train to Stockholm after grabbing some breakfast to go.  At 9:15 the conductor made an announcement that we were crossing the border into Sweeden, and at 9:30, the sun finally came up.  We didn't realize how far north we really were until that happened.  We all read and watched movies on the train ride, trying to keep ourselves occupied.

At 2:15, our train arrived in Stockholm, about 45 minutes late.  We went to buy tickets for the next day, but found out quickly that not everything would go according to plan.  The train we were going to take left on December 30, but arrived on the 31st, a holiday, so it wasn't running.  We went grabbed some subway tickets and decided to go to our hostel since there was nothing we could do about it right now.  Our hostel was small but nice, run by some very nice people.  They helped us figure out what to do for the day, and after we settled in we went out for some dinner.  On our way out we made some reservations to stop by the Absolut Ice Bar.  We went to the old city which is the middle island of the 3 islands of Stockholm, and ate dinner at a place called CC Restaurant.  We all decided to try something new and ate Reindeer with some Swedish Meatballs.  Both were delicious.  I have never had such amazing meatballs, and reindeer is actually very good.

From dinner we walked back up towards the train station to go to the Absolut Ice Bar.  The Ice Bar is a place made entirely of ice - the glasses, chairs, tables, and the bar itself are all made of ice.  We donned our parkas and gloves, and headed inside.  The bar was pretty awesome, as well it should be.  The drinks were good, but the coolest part was feeling as if you were inside a giant slab of ice.  After about a half hour we were freezing and decided to leave.  We got back to the hostel and chilled with some girls we met from Austria. We ended up getting pretty tired and crashed soon after.

The next morning we over-slept by 2 hours, but it was ok because we clearly all needed it.  We ate breakfast, checked out of our hostel, and began exploring the city.  The first place we went was the Vasa Musset.  The Vasa is an old Swedish war ship that sank in 1928, but was salvaged and preserved.  The ship was amazing, but unfortunately built poorly.  We enjoyed learning about Swedish history for a while, and then left to walk across town.  We ended up passing by Sergel's Torg, a 37-meter tall glass obelisk.  From there, we walked to Stadshaset, which is city hall.  The city hall was beautiful, as well it should be, as it is where the Nobel Prizes are given out each year.  While we were there we watched the sun set...at 2:15 pm.  We walked back through the old city again, and back towards our hostel to pick up our backpacks.  Since the train was cancelled, we had the brilliant idea to sleep in the train station all night.  Unfortunately, the train station closes at midnight, so we were forced to get a hotel across the street instead.  Alex and I were unable to sleep, so at about 2:00 am we went on a walk to entertain ourselves.  We ended up coming across a Kebab place, so we stopped in for something to eat.  While we were there, a fight began outside, and we ended up having to stay for over an hour as they searched for the person who started it.  Neither of us ended up sleeping at all that night.

Oslo, Norway

Hey everyone...we made it safe to Oslo.  Even though our plane ended up being delayed about 2 house, we still managed to see just about everything we wanted to see here.  The city is beautiful and we're having a great time.  Ryan and I are both keeping journals so we can update these blogs later, but like I said, for now I'll just update you on how we're doing.  We leave for Stockholm at 7:35 tomorrow morning (1:35 in America).  I'll let you know how that goes.  Talk to you all soon!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We left Connecticut at 2, and from then on the trip began with a relatively grim start.  As we stepped foot out of the car and began walking through the terminals at Newark, we all began discussing how we always check to see we have out wallets.  Funny thing, Pat didn't have his.  So after calling Alex's mom and having her turn the car around, Pat got his wallet out of the car and we made our way through security.  Our plane was 2 hours delayed due to a valve that doesn't do anything in the air anyway...actually it barely does anything at all...it allows for air conditioning in the plane while it's at the gate...brilliant.

We arrived in Oslo at 11:30 in the morning local time to a partly cloudy day with temps in the 20's and 30's.  Before we even went through customs, Brady managed to break something in the bathroom, so it looks like we'll be leaving our mark here.  We took Fly-to-Get to Oslo, which was a 20 minute train ride through gorgeous Norwegian countryside.  When we arrived in Oslo we bought our tickets for Stockholm for the following day, and began walking
to the hostel.  The hostel was only about 10 minutes away and very clean - Almost like a hotel.  We put our bags down and decided it would be best if we started exploring.

After asking the front desk exactly where we should go and what we should see, we headed towards Akershus Fortress and Castle.  The fortress was awesome and gave us amazing views of the city.  We were able to see all the way to the mountains, making us all wish we were able to ski.  The air was so clean and crisp in oslo it was hard to believe that you were even in a city at all.  Not only that, the entire city was quiet - dead quiet.  It was actually th perfect place to visit first, as it allowed for us to relax a bit.

From the fortress we began to walk towards the city center.  We found a great place to go ice skating in Spikersuppa, so we decided it would be fitting to go since we were in Norway.  After embarrassing ourselves for a little while, we walked up a very long hill to the Parliament and Royal Palace.  The Royal Palace had guards at the front gates, although I'm not sure it was necessary, as there was so much open land in front of the palace that you would be able to see anyone coming from a mile away.

After admiring the view, we walked back down and grabbed some dinner.  As it was Sunday,
nothing was really open except for a TGIFridays, so, unfortunately, that is what we ate.  Alex, Ryan, and I all got relatively mall meals, while Pat decided to get baby back ribs and a glass of merlot because, hey, he's on vacation (a phrase we expect to hear a lot on this trip).  Everything was so expensive that we couldn't believe it. We went back to our hostel and decided to rest for the night, as we were all pretty tired from the trip over.

Here It Goes Again

Beginning tomorrow, myself and three of my friends will begin traveling on the backpacking trip of a lifetime.  We will be leaving from Newark around 8 tomorrow night, and arrive in Oslo Norway at 7 am local time on Sunday morning.  From there, we will hit up 13 cities in 11 countires until we finally return home on January 19th.  Ryan, Pat, Alex, and I will all be traveling by train the entire time until we leave for Dublin, in which we will fly from Amsterdam.

During the trip, I will be keeping a journal of everything broken down city-by-city.  Once I come back I will post all of it for everyone to see.  During the trip, I will update this to let family and friends know how everyone is doing and what city we're in.  If we don't update quickly it will most likely be because we don't have internet where we are.  The itinerary is listed below.  If anyone needs to contact us please try Facebook or our E-Mail addresses since none of us will have phones.  I hope everyone had a great Christmas and has a Happy New Year.  We'll see you all in 2009!
